flight to London Heathrow was on Virgin Atlantic and was not very
pleasant. Even more croweded than usual and left two hours late.
However we were met on arrival Thursday morning by an Elderhostel
Representative and sent by van to the Hotel in London. (We found
that we had shared a row on the plane with a couple who were part
of our group.)
hotel was the Riverfront Plaza on the south shore of the Thames.
Very modern and quite satisfactory. We were met by Mel Montgomery
who would be the coordinator on our trip. We would meet the group
leader, andrew Thompson, in Cornwall. We were just in time to join
in the luncheon for the group. After that we took a good nap to
make up for the trip. Later we had dinner with the group at the
hotel and made an early night of it since it had started to rain.
This would be the last rain we would encounter on the trip, except
one other evening in Newquay. The weather throughout the trip was
next morning we were off on a bus for the trip to Penzance. Our
driver, Benny, would be with us throughout the trip. It was a long
day, almost 8 hours, because we had to make several 45 minute stops
to rest the driver. This was required by the European Community
regulations. We had to get our own lunches because, in the confusion
of leaving the hotel, our packed lunches were left behind.
got to Penzance and got ourselves comfortable in the Queens Hotel,
right o n the waterfront. This is old but quite comfortable and
proved very satisfactory. We had dinner with the group in the dining
room and it was quite good, as continued to be true of meals throughout
our stay at this hotel.
