September 25 - Last Day in Amsterdam
Off at 9:30 for the van Gogh Museum but got there too early, so we walked around the Museum Plain for a while. The new museum addition behind the van Gogh (423), more of the Rijksmuseum (424, 425), the Concertgebouw (426). A little time in the Museum Gift Shop. Then we were in the van gogh and up to the third floor to see an amazing collections. Two pictures shown here but more if you click here. Many pictures we had not seen before. On the floor below, more, and some pictures by other artists of the period. Very crowded.
Then we walked over to the Concertgebouw for a free concert at 12:30 by the Kaleidos String Quartet in the Kleine Zaal (429). Very nice, they played the Schubert Quartet Satz and the Verdi String Quartet in e minor. Then we took a taxi to the Anne Frank house and entered there after a short wait. Very moving, small, dimly lighted, with quotes posted on walls. Fig 430 is a postcard showing the back of the house where they were hidden, 431 her parent's room, and 432 the bookcase used to hide the entrance to the hiding place. Then we walked back again along the canals, looking at the city, and stopped at the Leidesplein in the Grand Cafe for broodjes (blt and gouda), tea, and beer, and for a little post card writing .
Back to the room for a nap and packing. Caught "Jessica" for the third afternoon. FDB cured and we went back to the Bark for dinner BMB had salmon terrine, lamb with coriander. FDB had filet of beef in wine sauce. Back to bed.
An uneventful day. Taxi to airport. Flight on Norhtwest on time and we had seating for two. Home in late afternoon and glad to be there.
