Saturday, October 13 - Munich

We started the day with a lecture by Tom Abbot: An Introduction to the Baroque. It was exccellent. Then about 11 we went off on the bus for a field trip to Munich.

We parked and walked to the Asamkirche, passing the Sendlinger Gate on the way. The Church of St. Johann Nepomuk, it is known by the name of the architect brothers and was built 1733-46. It's an excellent example of the late baroque. The we walked through the downtown area looking at the sites and spent a few minutes talking about the famous New Town Hall that was built in the late 19th C. We also walked through Dallmyr's elegant food store, which was packed with people.

After that we went off the visit the Schloss Nymphenburg which is in a western suburb of Munich. We had a very nice lunch in the Palmen Restaurant there and then walked to the Amalienburg, a small 18th C hunting lodge on the grounds. Tom chose it as an especially good example of the rococo. It's very simple on the outside and ornate inside.

"An exquisite example of rococo at its finest. The circular hall of mirrors creates an ethereal atmosphere in the Bavarian national colors, silver and blue. The charming pavilion was a present from Elector Karl Albrecht to his wife Amalia, a daughter of Emperor Joseph I. Built by Cuvilliés between 1734 and 1739, the Amalienburg is considered to be the loveliest pleasure pavilion in the European rococo tradition. "

After that we walked back for a brief visit to the Schloss Nymphenberg itself. We saw the elaborate entrance hall and the room filled with the pictures of Ludwig I's Gallery of Beauties.

At 4 we went back to the hotel for a rest and then had a free evening with dinner on our own. I know we had the rset but can't remember where we had dinner. (It's taken a long time to do the pictures and my memory is flagging.)
