Monday, October 15 - On the Road

Off in the morning at 8:30 on our way to Bamberg, but with a stop at Schloss Weissenstein in Pommersfelden on the way. This palatial country house was built by Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Bamberg and Archbishop of Mainz, to designs by Johann Dientzenhofer and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The famous Marstall (luxury stable) had been designed by Maximilian von Welsch. Weissenstein, built as a summer residence, remains in the Schönborn family.

It was early and a Monday so we had a private tour. The Archbishop knew how to live. After the tour we had lunch next to the castle at the Castle Restaurant Dom and then were on our way to Bamberg where we arrived about 4. The hotel was the Residenzschloss, not far from the center of town.

We took an orientation walk with Tom into Bamberg and then back to the hotel where we had a good dinner and then another lecture by Tom on "other aspects of the baroque."
