Thursday, October 18 - Travel to Weimar

We left at 8:30 for the bus ride to Weimar. On the way we stopped for a visit at "the Basilica of the Vierzehnheiligen (Fourteen Saints,) dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints venerated together, especially in Germany at the time of the Black Death. The late Baroque, Rococo basilica is located near the town of Bad Staffelstein near Bamberg. The structure, designed by Balthasar Neumann, was constructed between 1743 and 1772." "The fourteen angels of the lost children's prayer in Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel und Gretel are the Fourteen Helpers."

Another baroque wonder with the statues of the fourteen saints distributed around. St. Achatius, holding his head in his hands, is the helper of those with headaches. After an extended visit and a rest stop we were on our way to Weimar. We got there about 1:30 and had a late lunch at 2 at the hotel. This was the Romantik Hotel Dorotheenhof Weimar, a very attractive building in a park setting outside town.

After a good lunch we had several hours free. I went online and Barbara explored the grounds. At 5 we had a lecture by Tom Abbot on Weimar and the classical style. "In approximately 1760, a noticeable shift occurred in European society which manifested itself in all aspects of life. We speak of the Classical period which is experienced not only in literature but also in architecture, art, and even lifestyle and politics. This lecture explored Weimar in association with Goethe and Schiller as prototypes of the Classical period in Europe." Dinner followed and then to bed.
