Tuesday, October 23 - Pergamon Museum

This is the last day of the Elderhostel program, although we will stay two more days. It is a free day but Mareike will lead those who want to the Museum Island. We will go with her since we want to see the Pergamon Museum. We go with her on the bus from the RR terminal a few blocks away from the hotel. However the bus overshoots and we get off at the next stop, Alexanderplatz. I couldn't resist the contrast between the Marienkirche and the Television tower. We walked back to the Museum Island. Then we found our way to the Pergamon Museum which was built over a period from 1910 to 1930. It houses original-sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate, all consisting of parts transported from the original excavation sites. The museum is subdivided into the antiquity collection, the Middle East museum and the museum of Islamic art.

This was great, with the great Altar of Pergamon looming in the first room. We wandered around, looked at the pieces of the frieze on the wall and climbed to the top to see a room there. Then we went into the next room to see the Market Gate of Miletus (no picture) and a large Greek mosaic floor. We did the Middle East Museum in the South wing with the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way from Babylon. We passed up the museum of Islamic art (too much) and went to the North wing to see the Greek statues. By this time we were tiring and we went out to the Restaurant nearby and had a good lunch.

Going back on the bus we got off at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Gedächtniskirche) which is located Kurfürstendamm very near the hotel. Emperor Wilhelm II had the church built in 1895 in honor of his grandfather Wilhelm I. The original construction was of impressive monumentality and size. Mosaics inside the church recalled the life and work of Emperor Wilhelm I. During World War II, the church was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1943. The only remainder of the old building is the ruin of the belfry, which is also referred to as "der Hohle Zahn" ("the hollow tooth"). After the war, from 1951 to 1961, a new church was built right next to the site of the old one.

After this we went back to our room to rest. At 6 we had a farewell meeting with the staff in the hotel seminar room and then all walked to the Restaurant Savoy on Fasanenstrasse for a farewell dinner.
